Letting Thoughts Pass

Practice being the observer, not the thinker

5-10 minutes

One of the central teachings of The Untethered Soul is that we are not our thoughts — we are the awareness that watches them. This meditation trains that muscle. It can feel difficult at first, because our minds are not used to being witnessed without being believed. But with practice, it becomes one of the most freeing things you can do.

1

Settle In

Find a comfortable seated position. Close your eyes. Take a few deep breaths and let your body relax. You don't need to do anything special. You simply need to sit and notice.

2

Watch the Sky

Imagine that your mind is a vast, open sky. Your thoughts are clouds — some wispy and light, some heavy and dark, some fast-moving, some slow. You are not the clouds. You are the sky. The sky does not chase the clouds or try to make them disappear. It simply holds them, and they pass.

3

Notice Without Following

As thoughts arise — and they will — simply name them gently: "There is a thought about work." "There is a memory." "There is worry." "There is a plan." Don't follow the thought into a story. Just name it. Then return to the sky. You are not suppressing. You are practicing witnessing.

4

Return Again and Again

Each time you realize you've gotten caught in a thought — and this will happen many times — simply notice that you noticed. That moment of noticing IS the practice. Gently return to being the sky. There is no failing here. Every return is a success.

5

Rest in Awareness

In the final minutes, stop trying to do anything at all. Just rest in the awareness that you are aware. You exist. You are here. You are more than the noise. When you're ready, take a deep breath and slowly open your eyes.
